Ya if dice was going to do this, they would have done it with 1943, not BF3. Remember, BF3 will be a spin off of BF2. Just like there is talk of 2143 set in the future after BF3 as a spin off of BF2142.
But in terms of keep your hopes up, your chances are far better in getting a Mod for BF3 taking it back to WW2 1942 style.
